Narrative of the Young Shepherd

At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His existence was mostly unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the breezes through the lone tree on the hilltop were his constant associates. Day in day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.
Narratives of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” here The scared villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but saw no wolf.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did attack the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
